Dr. S.G. Susheelamma is the Founder President of Sumangali Seva Ashrama, a respected voluntary organization in Bangalore dedicated to serving destitute women, orphaned children, and economically weaker communities. She co-founded the Ashrama along with Smt. M. Kanthamma in 1975, beginning with minimal resources just Rs. 15 in hand and three children who needed care but driven by compassion and a deep desire to uplift the less fortunate.

Under Dr. Susheelamma’s leadership, the Ashrama adopted a distinct style based on Gandhian principles, earning recognition at both the state and national levels for its commitment to social welfare and empowerment. Today, Sumangali Seva Ashrama provides a sanctuary to about 100 children and 50 destitute women, and it also runs programs for slum improvement, rural development, education, health, and economic empowerment.s

Dr. Susheelamma is celebrated for her hands-on approach and dedication to social causes, transforming the Ashrama into a hub for holistic support ranging from running hostels, primary and high schools, rehabilitation centers, women’s self-help groups, and primary health centers, to organizing legal aid, medical camps, and adult literacy initiatives for disadvantaged groups. She has been recognized with awards and accolades for her service, and her vision continues to inspire the organization’s work in championing education, dignity, and rights for marginalized sections of society.

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, presented the Dr. Durgabai Deshmukh Award for the year 2006 to Smt. S.G. Susheelamma on behalf of Sumangali Seva Ashram, Bengaluru, at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on November 5, 2012. This is in honor of individuals or institutions for significant contributions to women's welfare and development. The award comes with a cash prize, a citation, and a shawl. The award for 2006 was presented during an event recognizing outstanding efforts in women's empowerment and social welfare.
